2008 Bilateral Korea-Italy Workshop on Photonics has finished
On October the 23rd and 24th 2008, within the current pattern of events of the “Italia in Corea” Science and Technology section, the meeting “2008 Bilateral Korea-Italy Workshop on Photonics for Communication and sensing”” was organized in Seoul by CNIT and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in coordination with KIST – Korean Institute of S&T and the S&T Office of the Italian Embassy. The meeting took place in the Shilla Seoul Hotel where 28 presentation were given: 14 by Italian speakers from various Italian universities, CNIT, and ICT industries (Ericsson Italia, Telecom Italia, Alcatel-Lucent, Pirelli). The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Giancarlo Prati and Dr. Sang-Bae Lee (KIST).
Italian delegation was top-level both nationally and internationally speaking, not only due to the presence of the Cordinator of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa and President of CNIT Prof. Giancarlo Prati but also for the presence of Prof. Orazio Svelto from the Milan Polytechnic Institute, Prof. Andrea Galtarossa from the University of Padova, Prof. Luigi Zeni from the University of Napoli, Dr. Giorgio Grasso CEO of Pirelli Labs, Dr. Pierangelo Chiappa from Alcatel-Lucent, and Eng. Pierpaolo Ghiggino from Ericsson-Marconi and other prestigious speakers.
Korean Delegation consists in 14 speakers from the following Universities, Scientific Organizations and Industrial Societies: SNU-Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, Inha University, Hanyang University, KAIST-Korea Advanced S&T, KIST-Korea Institute of S&T, ETRI-Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute, Samsung Electronics, Thaihan Cable Co., LG Nortel, Dongwon Systems Co. e Solid Tech Inc.
The meeting represented a technical-scientific initiative but also a contact between industrial operators in a sector, the ICT and Photonics, that has a consolidated economic relevance, but is also growing due to the digital revolution that is advancing on a worldwide scale.
The complete Program of the meeting together with the speakers biography and the summary of the reports is available online at: http://www.cnit.it/html/ftpcnitall/2008BrochureItalyKorea.pdf
The Workshop aims, focused on a theme which is of particular interest in Korea, were the analysis and discussion of the most recent developments in the field of Photonics applied to Information and Communication Technology and Sensing, which is considered to be the basic technology for the 21st century communications (as Electronics was in the 20th century), since photons beams are believed to concur more and more with electrons as carriers and administrators of Information packets.
Within the meeting, the range of analysis of photonic technologies was particularly wide and exhaustive: from digital optical process to semiconductor optical amplifiers, from new generation optical fibers to support electronics for communications, from optical networks to the most recent dispersion reduction techniques, from femto-second pulsed lasers to related optical waveguide and sensors.
The industrial contribution due to the presence of the best and most advanced Companies both Italian and Korean, allowed the evaluation of short and medium term trends in the evolution of systems that represent, in some cases, as indicated by Telecom Italia in the recent program “Life and Lives in bits”, also through an “emotions digitalization”, an innovative and essential step towards a better knowledge and awareness both of the nature and of its ecosystems and the possibility to find new balances in the human life in the World.
In the welcome speech given by Ambassador Massimo Leggeri, stress was put on the social relevance of the big digital revolution in progress (of which Italy was absolute pioneer), that was origin of deep changes in the everyday life and in the way we interact both with the system and with the community. The new “Communication Society” and “Ubiquitary Society” represent a remarkable simplification, acceleration and greater security in our life.
Dr. Sang-Bae Lee from KIST, Director of the Ministry of Education and S&T (International Cooperation Bureau-Bilateral Cooperation Division) Dr. Chang-Yune Lee, and Eng. Antonio Tata from the Italian science and technology office, opened the meeting. In particular Korean representatives underlined their satisfaction derived from the organization in Seoul of meetings characterized by such scientific depth and prior importance themes in the new and global “Information Society”, from a scientific – industrial, economical and social point of view. Appreciation was given in particular to the Photonics Workshop due to the active presence, as speakers, of diverse ICT industry representatives from both Countries.
The Workshop was appreciated by the Korean scientific and industrial community and significant effects are now expected on scientific and commercial agreement and cooperations.
Korean Newspaper and Websites in English and Korean reported the news about the meeting and an interview with Prof. Giancarlo Prati, CNIT President, was published by the Korea Times.
