LOGICA Project

LOGICA – LOGistic Innovative ChAin

Project co-funded by the PR FESR of the Region of Tuscany 2021–2027, Action 1.1.4
RS 2 2023 Call — “Research and development projects for SMEs and Midcaps”

Scientific Director: Dr. Mariano Falcitelli

The LOGICA project implements an integrated real-time monitoring and tracking system for multimodal containerized shipments, integrating direct satellite communication technologies and three-state UHF RFID seals, and offering end-to-end visibility, certified data security, and full interoperability among actors and technologies across the global supply chain.

The system consists of:

  1. A battery-powered Monitoring and Tracking device with active RFID, mounted on the container (MT-RFID);
  2. A service platform (the “LOGICA” platform) compliant with the oneM2M standard for collecting data generated by containers and making it available to end-user applications (logistics operators, regulatory authorities, shipping lines, freight forwarders, port agents, etc.);
  3. An interoperability interface, “InteroperaChain,” for logistics operators’ applications that want to access data from any DLT (e.g., IOTA, Hyperledger, etc.);
  4. An interoperability interface, “InterDPP,” for logistics operators’ Digital Product Passport applications.

The expected outcome of the LOGICA project is the prototyping and validation of a dry-container monitoring and tracking system at TRL 7 — i.e., demonstration of the system prototype in an operational environment. MT-RFID devices will be installed on containers belonging to a real transoceanic shipment, and the entire information system will be validated using the data generated during the voyage.

LOGICA is carried out by technical staff from LeghornGroup, a world leader in container security seal systems, together with researchers from the PNTLab of CNIT, who have carried out numerous innovation projects dedicated to integrating satellite and 5G cellular networks in logistics and port environments. Through LOGICA, CNIT advances its mission of technology transfer in areas strategic to the Tuscan coastal region, with excellence recognized by national (ASI) and European (ESA, ETSI, etc.) organizations.
