On Tuesday, 18 November, at 9:00 a.m., in the Cloister Hall of the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, a conference entitled Protecting the population from electromagnetic fields generated by radio base stations: focus on 5G will take place.

The expansion of communication networks, particularly 5G, poses new challenges in assessing exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and their potential effects on health and the environment. The 5G system has in fact required a thorough review of the operating procedures used to assess environmental impact, which has also seen the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) involved in drafting the recently published Guidelines for measuring electromagnetic fields generated by 5G telecommunications systems.

The conference will focus on the methodologies and measurement techniques for new generation 5G systems developed by SNPA. This event represents an important opportunity for students, researchers, technical professionals from telecommunications companies and, more generally, anyone involved in the environmental emissions of new mobile communication technologies to learn more about the metrology of these systems. The aim is to promote sustainable coexistence between technological development, health protection and ecosystem preservation.

Speakers will include Giuseppe Marsico and Daniele Franci from the Higher Institute for Environmental Research and Protection (ISPRA), Settimio Pavoncello from the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) of Lazio, and Alessandro Palombo, director of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technologies for Health at the Higher Institute of Health (ISS).
