Port of the future – 5G trials in Livorno awarded at the Hannover Messe Digital Days 2020
Digitalizing port operations with 5G and IoT started in 2016 when the Italian Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunication (CNIT) – Livorno Joint Laboratory with Port Network Authority and Ericsson Research initiated a cooperation around the so-called “Port of the Future” use cases. As 5G provides high flexibility, high bandwidth and low latency, it is considered a key enabling technology for the optimization of freight terminal operations, at the focus of the COREALIS (EU Horizon 2020 program) Research and Innovation Action project considering a field trial in Livorno (as in other four EU ports). A 5G-based control module for managing general cargo, performs a real-time control of loading/unloading operations, collects data via yard vehicles and implanted sensors (e.g. LIDAR, WDR cameras and tablets), and takes operating decisions based on real-time analytical processing. Introducing 5G, augmented reality (AR) and AI-based Use Cases in the port of Livorno leads to operational, economic, social and environmental benefits.
The 5G trial in Livorno has been awarded for “Industrial Energy Efficiency” at the Hannover Messe Digital Days 2020.
