The first on-site technical demonstration of the 5G MASS project, co-financed by ASI on the ESA Business Applications program in a public/private partnership led by TIM, was held on 30/7/2024.

The Port of Livorno hosted the demonstration, attesting a significant step in technology for port digitalization to support autonomous navigation.

The day began with a visit to the ECO Savona vessel, a test ship from the Grimaldi fleet used for the experimentation.

The technical session was opened by Admiral Nicola Carlone (who participated with other senior officials of the General Command of the Italian Coast Guard), the mayor of Livorno Luca Salvetti, Dr. Roberta Mugellesi Dow of ESA, Dr. Luca Salamone, Director General of ASI, Luciano Guerrieri, president of the Port Network Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea.

Hosting the event at the Dogana d’Acqua research center in Livorno were Prof. Bogoni, director of the National Laboratory of Photonic Networks and Technologies-PNTLab in Pisa, and Dr. Paolo Pagano, head of the Livorno experimental site (part of the PNTLab) and technical manager of the 5G MASS project.

At the CNIT laboratory that hosts the experimental Remote Operations Center, the researchers of the 5G MASS consortium (TIM, CNIT, Grimaldi Group, CETENA, Flysight) demonstrated the maritime functions implemented through the project, enabled by the 5G millimeter wave terrestrial network installed in the port and by the sharing of data between the shipboard and the digital port environments (with distributed multimedia and a meteo-marine monitoring systems).

“Research and development activities around the so-called “Port of the Future” are a priority for the PNTLab. I am very proud of the outcome of this project and I thank Dr. Pagano who coordinated the PNTLab activities in an excellent manner.”, Prof. Bogoni said.

The Pilot Corporation of the Port of Livorno is participating in the experiment, which aims at assisting from ashore the bridge team in port entry and exit operations.

The 5G MASS project will be concluded by the end of 2024.
