Expertise: The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia research unit (RU) focuses on the following areas:
- Wired and wireless networks
- Optical communications and networks
- Signal processing and navigation, control of networks
- RF integrated circuits
As regards wired and wireless networks, the RU focuses on Internet of Things, mobile systems and networks, video distribution architectures. Moreover, the RU has been working for a decade on “mission critical” systems and networks, also within two EU FP7 projects “E-SPONDER : A holistic approach towards the development of the first responder of the future” and “PPDR-TC: Public Protection and Disaster Relief Transformation Centre”.
As regards optical communications and networks, the RU has a strong expertise in modelling of Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) and Microstructured Fibers (MFs) with both solid and hollow core. Major applications of such kind of fibers concern sensing, signal processing and high power ultra-short pulse delivery. Moreover, regarding optical networks the RU has been working for more than a decade on Hybrid Optical Switching (i.e. circuit, burst and packet optical switching) and Power Consumption.
Regarding signal processing and navigation, control of networks the RU has been working on localization and navigation problems and smart grids, data analysis and optimization and control of networks.
In the field of the integrated circuit design, the RU claims more than ten years experience in the design of radio frequency integrated circuits in CMOS and BiCMOS silicon technologies with integration scales ranging from 65nm to 350nm. Several prototypes, working in frequency ranges from the C- to the Ku-band and up to the millimeter-wavelengths were designed, fabricated, and tested. The circuits include low noise amplifier, mixer, phase locked loop, one radiometer, and quadrature and rotary travelling wave voltage controlled oscillators.
