The Cleansky project X-WALD, coordinated by RaSS Lab. Of CNIT, wins the second prize at the annual Clean Sky award 2017!

The X-WALD project “Avionic X-band Weather signal modelling, and processing vALidation through real Data acquisition and analysis” was awarded second prize at the annual Clean Sky award for Best Projects from Partners during the Closing Event ‘Europe, Innovation and Aviation: Are we keeping up?’ in Brussels on March 22, 2017.

X-WALD was selected against more than 500 active projects funded in the EU Cleansky program. This result is of paramount importance because the polarimetric radar technology proposed in X-WALD is innovative in the Cleansky program where the aerospace technical research is dominant.

The X-WALD project, managed by prof. Fabrizio Berizzi director of the RaSS Lab. CNIT, in collaboration with the three partners: Metasensing (NL), Ingegneria dei Sistemi (IT) and Politecnico di Milano (IT), allowed the first European measurement campaign with an avionic polarimetric weather radar.

The main project objectives were: selection of an appropriate X-BAND polarimetric radar for weather measurements, avionic update and setup, refinement and validation of the avionic polarimetric radar signal simulator (CleoSim), refinement and validation of the weather radar signal processing and trajectory optimization algorithms for improving hazard awareness in flight, reducing the pilot’s workload and reducing the polluting emission in the atmosphere.

Fabrizio Cuccoli, head of research of Lab RaSS and scientific coordinator of the X-WALD project, receives the prize by Giuseppe Pagnano, the Cleansky Coordinating Project Officer.

Among more than 500 active projects, 22 were nominated: the Z-Damper project was awarded first prize, followed by X-WALD and GET READY.
